Johan Gielen - DJ og producer fra Belgien taler med DJz.dk om sit nye Airscape album og hvad vi kan forvente fra ham i nærmeste fremtid.

I forbindelse med udgivelsen af Airscape albummet 'Now & Then' fik vi mulighed for at få en snak med Johan Gielen om bl.a. Airscape projektet, Trance Energy og hvad der ellers sker omkring ham pt. (telefon-interviewet er på engelsk.)

DJz.dk: Hello Johan, first of all thank you for taking your time to this interview! How are doing, and what have you been up to lately?

Johan: I’m very well , at this moment I’m working a lot in the studio to do some remixes and producing some new Johan Gielen tracks.

DJz.dk: So the debut album of Airscape is out, and you can say it’s been a while, after so many years how come it first apperas now?

Johan: The last Airscape record was out in 2006 named Sosei. After that I had a little break until today. The reason why is that Airscape has always been my child and with this album you have a nice overview from the classics and the new tracks.

DJz.dk: On the new album you have among others teamed up with one of your former producer partners, Sven Maes, how was it to work with him again after the years you have been apart production wise? And can we expect more from him and you together in the future or was it just for this one time?

Johan: Yes indeed we have teamed up to do a remix of L’esperanza and it worked out very well. At this moment it’s just for one time only, but never say never.

DJz.dk: Many people would probably say that when Sven decided to leave the project in 2005 this was the end of it, how come you ‘re-invented’ it with the release last year ‘My Love’, did you feel you couldn’t just stop it or..?

Johan: Well Sven has done a few tracks with me on Airscape in the nineties; along the way I have worked with several producers on this. My Love was a song I have done with Jop Van Amersfoort and the vocals of this song where done by the lovely Jes Brieden from Los Angles, I love her voice!

DJz.dk: How big an influence has it had on your career that the Airscape project became such a big success?

Johan: Hard to say as Airscape always has been a studio project but ofcourse for sure it had some influence. Especially when Alex Gold from Xtravaganza records in Londen had put Airscape on the map, entering the official UK charts several times .

DJz.dk: When the coorporation between you and Sven stopped in Airscape, does that also mean that we won’t see any more relases under the Svenson & Gielen name?

Johan: Yep, for this moment it’s a no, because I’m too busy with my own stuff.

DJz.dk: What happened to the new remixes of Twisted? Some years ago you mentioned that there was gonna be an updated release of it with new remixes, among others the Danish dj DJ Choose made a remix of it. What happened to that release?

Johan: It’s still waiting to be released, the record company is planning to release it again with new remixes including the dj Choose remix in 2010.

DJz.dk : In many years, 15 times in a row, you have been a fast instalment and on the line up for the Trance Energy event in Holland, but this year you’re performing at the event ’Before the Energy’ instead, and not at Trance Energy how come?

Johan: Politics and money I guess, plus I have a booking outside of Holland on the same night. I didn’t want to disappoint my fans so I’m playing the day before Trance Energy in Utrecht.  I hope to see you all over there.

DJz.dk: What’s in the pipeline in the near future for Johan Gielen?

Johan: A lot of new productions and the new Johan Gielen album, and playing around the world ofcourse ;-)

DJz.dk: What do you do when you’re not on the road dj’ing, or in the studio making music? Do you have any hobbies etc.?

Johan: I haven’t go much time left but if I have some time I like to dive.

DJz.dk: On the new Airscape album you have also choosen to make some collaborations with Daniel Wannrooy, Cor Fijneman and Mark Green among others, can you tell us something about how that idea came up and how it ended up being when the album was finished?

Johan: Well ........... these are very good producers and they have a lot of talent; 1&1 =3.

Above all, I’m very pleased with Cor Fijneman, and still working with him at this moment: more tunes to come soon!

DJz.dk: At the moment there is many new young talents around the world that is steadly starting to building up a name and career, do you have any particular one(s) which productions you like? And if you would/could name someone to watch out for, in the year 2010 who would it be?

Johan: Cor Fijneman , Sied Van Riel , and everybody who plays music from their heart!

DJz.dk : Who was the last person to buy you a drink?

Johan: My brother last night

DJz.dk: What was the latest book you read? Was it good?

Johan: None; I prefer to watch a good movie, the last one was Avatar - it’s just amazing

DJz.dk: Place on earth you haven’t been, but would like to see before you leave this world?

Johan: Tough question, there’s not many places I haven’t been, but if I have to pick, Vietnam is on the wishlist for a holiday

DJz.dk: What have you been doing the last ½ hour before doing this interview?

Johan: I just got back from the hairdresser and I’m burning new tunes on CD at the moment as I have to play in Barcelona tonight.

DJz.dk: Favourite meal and why?

Johan: Sushi! Best food in the world.

DJz.dk: Any chance we’ll see you in Denmark soon?

Johan: I hope so! My agency is working on this.
